Updated version of Project #3 with improvements from classmate critiques.  "I" in intelligent is highlighted as suggested, strong is "bloated" to suggest strength, Determined is (supposed to be)more bold.  I wanted to make Determined appear as an exclamation point, but it is not wide enough at the top.  Confident is mt favorite, it looks like a "smile."  A nice smile shows confidence.

project essay

The assignment for Project # 3 in ART 105-02 was to describe ones self in five adjectives.  Using these adjectives, each student then, followed a list of criteria to create a typographical self-portrait.  Using Art & Design concepts, I have implemented the principle of  proportion by emphasizing Hard Working as the largest (and darkest), Determined next, then Strong, followed by Confident and Intelligent.  The size and location of these words create balance.  The words create unity because they describe me. The size and shade from dark to light create hierarchy and scale.  The curve of Determined gives the feel of rhythm.  The horizontal placement of Hard Working Strong, Confident and Intelligent stacked alternately around Determined create proximity.
I used a different font for each word to show variety.
Value is created through shading that starts with the focal point at Hard Working, in black, working upward, becoming lighter through Strong, Determined, Confident, and Intelligent.  The capital letters at the beginning of each word create repetition.  The alternating capital letters in Strong reflect the different levels of my strength, such as academic, parental, social and mechanical.
